It is 1919 and Frank Gibbons, just demobbed, settles in Clapham with his wife and children, his mother-in-law and his sister-in-law, and is delighted to find an old army pal, Bob Mitchell, living next door. The story follows the trials and tribulations of these working class families until the threat of the Second World War in 1937.
